WASHINGTON, DC.- Statement from Ben Monterroso, executive director of Mi Familia Vota, on the fourth anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program announcement.

“Today we celebrate the anniversary of a major and decisive step for the immigrants’ rights movement. Four years ago, President Obama announced a policy that would help approximately 730,000 young people improve their lives, benefit their families and their communities.

“These are the young people who are now pursuing higher education, have access to better paying jobs and contribute to our nation’s economy. They are the fierce leaders and advocates who represent our communities.

“The benefits of DACA for our country and our community are evident and need to be celebrated. However, we need to remember that the only way we can achieve a long term solution for millions of hard-working immigrant families is through a comprehensive immigration reform with a pathway to citizenship. And the only way to achieve it is through the power of our vote as Latino voters.

“Now more than ever do we have the option to elect candidates who are committed to work and fight for immigrant communities and who will make our issues a priority when they reach office. The power is in our hands and it is our responsibility to exercise it through the ballot box.”
